Adding Space & Light: a tenement flat is opened up and transformed

Aaltspace transforms a traditional, cellular flat layout into a free flowing, flexible plan that can grow and adapt to a young family’s requirements

A growing family had a typical dilemma: sell up and move on to find a larger home, or stay and convert their flat to meet their burgeoning needs. aaltspace provided the client with the inspiration they were looking for with a clever conversion that put a beautiful but super functional kitchen at the heart of the flat. Social, dining and living spaces bookend the kitchen and allow family life to play out in a relaxed way.

The existing cellular layout

It’s all about the plan

Locked deep within the plan was valuable space that was simply not being used to its full potential. aaltspace re-planned the flat around a functional core comprising  of a new kitchen, additional bedroom, kitchen and hallway storage as well as a location for a new boiler and washing machine. We worked really hard on the detail resolution, fitting everything into a beautiful assemblage of bespoke cabinetry and concealed storage. This new layout created a ’figure-8’ plan, improving the flexible nature of the spaces and - to the great enjoyment of the ‘toddler clients’ - an endlessly exciting circuit loop for fun and games.
